I finally decided to give it a go. Following this great tutorial ...
http://jewelrymakingjournal.com/metal-stamps-tips-and-techniques/
I purchased my stamps from Harbor Freights (found it by the hammers)...came to about $10.
From Lowe's, I spent about $7 on different sizes of washers and also I small bottle of Brasso.
I bought the Brasso cause I noticed on some of the comments from the tutorial that the finished product sometimes looked dull...
Also, I wasn't quite Shiite what finish or what type of washers to buy.. besides the size, there are choices between stainless, zinc... I was a bit overwhelmed. I just grabbed a few different sizes and finishes..for about $2 I had quite a collection.
Brought it all home and gave it a try....
I am still learning, but I am getting it. This is a project that takes a little practice and you will mess up quite a few washers. But its okay cause they are very inexpensive. And well, for the ones that are messed up, don't throw them away...there are other tutorials out there. I will give those a try next week.
For now... Here's a look at my try. Please ignore the ugly look of the rope I have in the picture...I was too excited to share with everyone and show my brother a sample project I have in mind for our Family reunion. Think of all the possibilities...key chains, necklace, bracelets, ornaments, gift tags...
Notes:
- a fine tip sharpie would probably work best to get into the stamped impressions. (I didn't have one on hand.)
- polish the finished product with Brasso or something similar.
- definitely splurge and purchase a lot of washers... Be prepared to have a few mess ups. .and when you do mess up...don't worry. Put those washers aside for another project.
- oh, and once you start, if you decide you want to get fancy with your stamped washers... Here is a website that has all kinds of stamps... Different fonts even little images...
